Assistive technology (AT) is any device or equipment that helps you do something more safely or independently — from grab rails to powered wheelchairs and communication devices.

Levels of AT

The NDIS groups AT by cost and complexity. Low-cost items (under $1,500) are simple to purchase, while higher-cost AT usually needs an assessment and a quote from an allied health professional.

Getting the right advice

An occupational therapist or physiotherapist can recommend equipment suited to your needs and write the evidence the NDIA requires. Trialling equipment before you buy is strongly encouraged.

Repairs and replacement

Remember to budget for maintenance and repairs. AT that breaks down can usually be repaired or replaced through your plan, but it helps to plan ahead.
